New  KIDZART
(K-2) This is where Scholars Power Up their creative energy.  Scholars are introduced to a personal tool box of creative skills.  Through interactive format they learn how to use these tools to access the power of their imagination.  Classes are full of eye-opening surprises as students interpret shapes, colors and proportion.  Soon they are ready between the lines and drawing their own conclusions they begin to express their ideas freely and to overcome the impulse to judge.  Mistakes are minimized with learned strategies to find solutions.  The critical first steps toward developing a
personal style start here.

(3-7)  The realm of possibility is the captivating point at KidzArt!  Scholars embark on a virtual journey to explore the many elements of the visual arts.  During their travels, students are exposed to a variety of artistic styles,
cultural interpretations and mediums.  The element of brainstorming and more complex forms of problem solving are introduced through interactive format.  Students begin to talk enthusiastically about possibilities.  They
become more confident in their attempts at self expression.  Their destination of their own personal style gets closer.

DRAMA CLASS   
Lighthearted Productions uses games, stories, acting techniques to put students'
creative thinking skills to work. Students will learn basic rehearsal and performance skills, and will audition, rehearse and perform for parents and friends on the last

(K-3) Dive Into Books -each week the scholars will play games, hear stories and bring them to life.  This class will foster a love of books and promote reading and
comprehension skills.  We will add costumes, and props and music as part of the fun.  We will choose a favorite story to perform on May 4, for the extravaganza.

(4-7) Let's Make A Scene -scholars will read scripts, memorize lines, and work on monologues.  This class will strengthen audition skills, public speaking, and assist in coaching for the talent show. Students will perform on Friday May 4, 2012.

Bricks4Kids is a hands-on class where students will design and build machines, catapults, pyramids, derby cares, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO bricks.  While exploring engineering, architecture and physics students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Registration Deadline:  After School Enrichment Classes begin the week of
September 6, and will end in December 2011. Registrations must be received by August 31 without being subject to late fee.

Cancellations:  When there is no school, the classes will not meet. On ½ days after school activities will begin at 12:00 noon.  Classes missed due to inclement weather will not be made up. 

Later Programs:  Scholars who are in programs with later start times will be supervised on campus in a study hall until their programs begin. Parent's are encouraged to pick up promptly upon the end of each class period and will be subject to late fee of $1.00 per minute.

Winter Session:  Winter Session will begin the Week of January 9, 2012 and will continue through the first week of May.

MANDARIN                                                                                                               
Thomas Edwards is a graduate student at UNCC in Foreign Language Education focusing on Spanish and Chinese.  He is currently teaching Chinese to the 5th and 6th graders at Socrates Academy.  He has lived in Shanghai, China and studied at Shanghai Normal University.
Beginner Chinese:  The 3rd & 4th grade class will include a basic overview of Chinese. Scholars will learn phrases and grammatical patterns useful in everyday conversation. Chinese: The 5th - 7th grade classes will get supplemental language learning that will enhance their vocabulary and grammar in Chinese. The 6th graders who perform well in Chinese class as well as the afterschool will be recommended to take the HSK1 or YCT (Chinese language tests given by the Chinese government)  Success in these tests can lead to scholarship opportunities both in the US as well as in China.

New MUSIC WITH PIZAZZ

This weekly meeting of interested art scholars is an opportunity for them to work on independent art projects of their choosing, under the guidance of Laurie Sullivan.  This is not a structured group lesson.  Scholars can bring art projects from home, or can use available reference materials.  Basic art supplies are available, such as art paper, art pencils, color pencils, watercolors, oil pastels, and tempera paints. Art Club members can select one completed art work per quarterly session, to have on display for one week, in the school's office.

GREEK DANCE                                                                                    
Greek Dance is an old tradition. This Coed Dance class will expose students to traditional dances from all over Greece.  Traditional Greek dancing has a primary social function. It brings the community together at key points in the lives of individuals and families, such as weddings; and at key holiday celebrations. New BRICKS4KIDS
Bricks4Kids is a hands-on class where students will design and build machines, catapults , pyramids, derby cares, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO bricks.  While exploring engineering, architecture and physics students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.

This Coed Dance class encompasses ballet, jazz and creative movement skills. TGA GOLF 
Socrates Academy welcomes TGA Golf back for another successful round of golf!   Scholars enjoy the excitement of learning  and developing golf skills in an incredibly fun environment so they will grow to love the game!  Tony has been coaching as Director with TGA of Charlotte since 2007 and receives incredible testimonials from parents and kids.  He teaches over 15 classes weekly so that experience shows through in his classes.

MATI KARATE
Mr. Don Newell began his training in Martial Arts in 1982. He received his Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate in 1985. In fact, the evening that Mr. Newell tested for his Black Belt, the testing panel felt that his test was quite exceptional and also awarded him a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Combat Karate. He is presently a 4th degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate and 1st Degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kubodo cane. Eliza Newell, Mr. Newell's Daughter and assistant is a 1st degree Black Belt and helps assists Sensei Newell with the class as well.

Christine Meiss graduated with a BFA from the University of Arizona.  She has worked in the printing industry, advertising, taught art classes in the Catholic school system.  Your scholar will bring home beautiful masterpiece suitable for display in your home.  Please send in an old t-shirt with your child-we do get dirty.

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Registration Deadline:  After School Enrichment Classes begin the week of
September 6, and will end in December 2011. Registrations must be received by August 31 without being subject to late fee.

Cancellations:  When there is no school, the classes will not meet. On ½ days after school activities will begin at 12:00 noon.  Classes missed due to inclement weather will not be made up. 

Later Programs:  Scholars who are in programs with later start times will be supervised on campus in a study hall until their programs begin. Parent's are encouraged to pick up promptly upon the end of each class period and will be subject to late fee of $1.00 per minute.

Winter Session:  Winter Session will begin the Week of January 9, 2012 and will continue through the first week of May.
