Our Mission

The mission of the Socrates Academy is to work in partnership with parents and community to encourage our students to reach their full potential by developing critical, analytical thinking skills and becoming self-confident in a high achieving, multicultural, disciplined environment. Particular emphasis is placed on developing proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics both in English and Greek through the use of the Socratic Method.

Noah's Art

Monday

 

The instructors from Noah’s Art strive to show the children the joy of  being creative by zeroing in on developing skills used in the creative process.  Artists will explore 3-Dimensional Art (sculpture, collage, relief and crafts) with a variety of materials including clay, wire, cardboard, paper mache' and more. Each child will leave the session with art projects that are unique to them and their experience to class.

 

Grades: K-5
Time: 3:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Don Newell began his training in Martial Arts in 1982. He received his Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate in 1985. In fact, the evening that Mr. Newell tested for his Black Belt, the testing panel felt that his test was quite exceptional and also awarded him a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Combat Karate. He is presently a 4th degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate and 1st Degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kubodo cane. Eliza Newell, Mr. Newell’s Daughter, and assistant is a 1
st degree Black Belt and helps assists Sensei Newell with the class as well.

Bricks4Kids is a hands-on class where students will design and build machines, catapults, pyramids, derby cars, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO bricks. While exploring engineering, architecture and physics students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Individual Piano Lessions (Also Recorder or Accordion) 


Mr. Zaimakis has studied piano, accordion, flute, and recorders as well as voice, choir direction & composition at Heraklion Conservatory, State Conservatory of  Thessalloniki-Greece & Conservatoire de Rennes-France. He has conducted professionally since 1996 and has taught choir and music according to the Orff System at Socrates Academy since February 2008. Dimitris Zaimakis has taught Piano, Accordion & recorders since 1988. In 1995 he was named "Professor A" in teaching the instruments above by Greek ministry of culture.

Seth Boulton has been a professional teacher and performer of music for 14 years.  He has toured the east coast and recorded two albums with his band, Seth Boulton and the Dream Machine.  Seth has taught music for D&S Talent in Monroe, NC as well as Explore Music and Art in Matthews, NC.  His music lessons are a blend of technical theory mixed with the styles of the students' choosing, all in a laid-back friendly approach that allows the student to learn at his or her own pace in a comfortable setting.

 

Grades: 2-5

This drama program promotes teamwork, builds self-confidence and strengthens imagination. Lighthearted Productions uses games, stories, acting techniques to put students' creative thinking skills to work. Students will learn basic rehearsal and performance skills, and will audition, rehearse and perform for parents and friends on the last day of class.
