OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL

QUICK FACTS

  • Socrates Academy held it's first middle school classes in the fall of 2011.

  • We have 80 seats per grade level and our core class sizes are limited to 20 scholars

  • Our school is a safe, community environment

  • Our Middle School scholars get recess or P.A. (Physical Activity) every day. We know when kids move they learn better!

  • We have 12 athletic teams. 5 of those teams, tennis, bowling, track, cross country and golf are "no cut" sports which means anyone can join and enjoy a Middle School Athletic experience!

  • We have dedicated EC staff for our Middle School Scholars

  • Our scholars chose Chinese or Spanish in addition to Greek language totaling 2 high school credits in foreign language.

  • Our small class sizes allow our all of our teachers to know all of our students.

Greek

The benefit to having studied Greek Language in addition to another Foreign Language in High School, is that the Greek Language credits may make the student stand out and look unique against his/her competition and they are the root of many scientific and literary terms. Signature Experiences

6th Grade ~ Camping

Students learn new skills, practice team building and work toward being their best self in Camp Thunderbird's 100+ acre playground.

7th Grade ~ Roller Coasters and Physics

Our Scholars experience Carowinds from a scientific perspective, learning about physics, motion and speed.

7th Grade ~ Yiasou Festival

Scholars experience Greek culture, food and music first hand by attending Charlotte's own Yiasou Festival!

7th Grade ~ Trip to Greece

Every summer our 7th grade scholars have the opportunity to travel to Greece as a group with the school. This trip is sponsored and organized by individuals in the U.S. and Greece and is an outstanding opportunity for our scholars! For the price of an airline ticket, our scholars can expand their learning experience from the classroom to the real world where they can apply their knowledge of the Greek language and culture, as well as visit and explore places they have thus far only seen in books!

8th Grade ~ History and the Capitol

Our 8th grade students spend approximately a week, touring our nations capital and experiencing all Washington D.C. has to offer.

HOMEWORK

We believe the purpose of homework is practice instead of mastery. That means that while our students do receive homework, we prefer for most of their work to be in the classroom. We are a "homework light" school.

TECHNOLOGY

Our scholars aren't in front of a computer screen all day long! In fact, most of our teachers prefer hands-on or direct-method teaching. Technology is used in our classrooms to support teaching, not replace it.

We do not allow any students to use cell phones during school hours.

High School Credits Earned in Middle School

  • Students who received a final grade of “C” or better in 3 years of Middle School Spanish or Chinese class will receive credit for Spanish I or Chinese I. This will allow them to take Spanish II or Chinese II when they begin High School. Check with your High School Guidance Counselor for more information on transferring language credits.

  • Socrates Students who take 3 years of Greek Language and receive a Final Grade of at least a “C” average in each class are given up to 3 High School credits in Greek Language.

  • The Ellinomatheia exam is not associated with High School credit. At this time, however passing this exam gives you college credit to University of North Carolina CHARLOTTE, (UNCC) only.

SERVICE

Our Scholars have the opportunity to participate in service projects both inside and out of our school. Whether planning projects through Student Council, or supporting them by collecting recycleables or bringing in toiletries for hurricane victims, our students learn to give back.
