MAP Growth Assessment Testing

April 16, 2018

You may have heard that our students spent some time testing last week! This is Socrates Academy’s pilot year for MAP testing. Grades K-8 were tested at the beginning of the school year and again in the spring.  The MAP or Measures of Academic Progress Growth is a computerized assessment test aligned with North Carolina curriculum standards in math, reading and language usage and we use the data from this test to develop targeted instructional strategies and to plan school improvement.

The MAP Growth test is a national measure or benchmark. These assessments were developed by NWEA, a research-based, not-for-profit organization who uses anonymous assessment data from over 10.2 million students to create national norms. That means this test doesn’t just compare our students statewide, but compares them across the nation.  The first test in the fall showed us that all of our grade level averages at Socrates Academy scored higher than the national average. Go Team!

Scholars use laptops take the test online so Mrs. Keilen, our Instructional Technology Facilitator, is instrumental in administering these tests to our scholars. For K-5, Mrs. Keilen brings laptops to the classrooms that need them for their testing sessions.  She’s there to get the scholars logged in and to help with technical issues that may arise. She had a team of extremely helpful 5th graders assisting with test preparation for K-2. In Middle School, teachers run their own testing sessions, with Mrs. Keilen available for potential issues if any arose.

Every scholar gets different questions, but the topics are similar. The test is adaptive which means questions get harder if the student answers them correctly and become easier if the child is submitting incorrect answers.

Results are in the form of a RIT score (Rasch Unit) which is an estimation of a student’s instructional level and a measurement of growth throughout the school year. MAP Growth assessments are used to measure a student’s growth in math, reading and language usage from year to year.

The data from the MAP Growth test provides educators with information used to improve teaching and learning, and make student-focused, data-driven decisions. The test results are immediate and within 24 hours provide information on specific types of math and elements of reading. This allows teachers to incorporate the individualized results into planning, guided instruction and to pinpoint topics for review.
