Building windows in the world — one scholar at a time.
Socrates Academy Foundation is the independent 501(c)(3) behind Socrates Academy — a tuition-free, K–12 public charter school in Matthews, NC,where scholars learn to think through the Socratic Method, grow fluent in both English and Greek, and step into the world as confident, compassionate global citizens rooted in the enduring values of Hellenism.
What began in 2005 with 67 scholars is now a thriving K–12 community— a fulfillment of late co-founder Larry Peroulas' vision to open "windows in the world" for every scholar. Your gifts carry that vision forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Socrates Academy Foundation
Giving Basics
If Socrates Academy is a public school, why does it need philanthropic support?
Socrates Academy is a tuition-free public charter school, and like every North Carolina charter, it receives a fixed per-pupil allotment of state and local funds. That allotment covers the daily work of educating our scholars — but by law it does not cover the things that make a campus a home: buildings, athletic facilities, land, transportation, or salary supplements for our most credentialed teachers. North Carolina charter schools receive no capital funding whatsoever. Every classroom, courtyard, and playing field our Owl Family enjoys was built through private generosity. The Socrates Academy Foundation exists to provide that margin of excellence — the difference between a school that meets the standard and one that defines it.
What is the Socrates Academy Foundation, and how is it different from the Academy?
The Foundation is the independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization that raises, stewards, and invests philanthropic gifts on behalf of the Academy. The Academy educates; the Foundation builds, funds, and endows. The Foundation also holds title to the school's physical campus. Both organizations are independent nonprofits working toward one shared mission — a world-class classical education rooted in Hellenic tradition.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes. The Socrates Academy Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 26-2352170). Gifts are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law, and we provide a receipt for every contribution. As always, we encourage you to consult your tax advisor regarding your specific circumstances.
Where Your Gift Goes
What is the difference between the Annual Fund and the Capital Campaign?
Think of it as the difference between sustaining and building.
The Annual Fund powers the school year already underway — enriching the classroom experience, supporting our teachers, and funding the programs that bring the Socratic Method to life. Annual giving is organized around our five Pillars of Giving -
-
Hellenic Legacy — the Greek language and cultural heart of the school
-
Socratic Classroom — academic enrichment and the art of inquiry
-
Mind, Body & Spirit — student wellness and character
-
Knowledge & Discovery — libraries, STEM, and the life of the mind
-
Owl Athletics — competitive and recreational sport
The Capital Campaign builds the campus that will outlast us all — land, facilities, and the permanent infrastructure of the school. Capital giving is organized around three pillars: Oikos (our buildings and home), Athlos (athletics and competition), and Polis (the shared spaces that bind our community together). Because the state funds neither, both campaigns depend entirely on you.
How have past gifts been used?
Generosity is written into the very ground our scholars walk. Private philanthropy has helped Socrates Academy acquire additional land, construct our Middle School, and build a dedicated facility for our 4th and 5th grade scholars. Most recently, your support carried us to Phase 1 of Upper School construction — and brought our vision of a complete K–12 campus within reach.
Building the Upper School: Phase 2
What is the next chapter for our campus?
Having completed Phase 1, we now turn to Phase 2 — the work that transforms an Upper School building into a true Upper School experience. Phase 2 will deliver:
-
the Upper School courtyard, the gathering heart of student life
-
a Competition Soccer Field
-
a Gymnasium
-
and Track and Field Facilities
Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026. This is the most ambitious building effort in the Foundation's history, and it will define athletics, community, and campus life for a generation of Owls to come.
Are naming opportunities available?
Yes. Phase 2 offers a rare and meaningful way to leave a lasting legacy at Socrates Academy. From the gymnasium and athletic fields to the courtyard and individual spaces within it, naming opportunities are available at a range of levels — for families, alumni, businesses, and friends who wish to be permanently woven into the story of our school. To explore naming a space, we invite you to contact the Foundation directly for a personal conversation.
Ways to Give
What is a matching gift, and how do I double my impact?
Many employers will match their employees' charitable contributions — often dollar for dollar — effectively doubling your gift at no additional cost to you. If your company participates, a $50 monthly contribution could become $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, for our scholars. It is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to amplify your generosity. Check with your employer's HR or community-giving office, or contact the Foundation and we will help you find out whether your company matches.
Can I make a recurring gift?
Absolutely — and we hope you will. Recurring monthly gifts are the steady foundation on which we plan, build, and dream. A modest amount given faithfully each month provides the dependable support that one-time gifts cannot, and it makes you a year-round partner in our scholars' success. You may set up a recurring gift in minutes through our giving page.
Why does giving from within our own community matter so much?
When we approach foundations, corporations, and major benefactors beyond our walls, their first question is almost always the same: How many of your own families give? Strong internal participation is the single most persuasive signal we can offer — it tells the wider world that the people who know Socrates Academy best believe in it most. Every gift, at every size, strengthens our case and our credibility. We are actively cultivating supporters far beyond our community, and your participation is what opens those doors.
What other ways are there to support the Foundation?
Beyond annual, capital, and recurring gifts, you can support Socrates Academy through gifts of stock, planned and legacy giving, sponsorships of signature events, and volunteer leadership. If you have a particular passion or capacity in mind, we would welcome the conversation — there is a place for every member of the Owl Family in this work.
